Training camp is just getting under way across the NFL. This time of year, teams and their fans are full of optimism as another season approaches. Each team has dreams of being better than last year.
Each and every player plans on having their best seasons yet. Optimism abounds throughout the NFL and yes that goes for the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots as well.
In Kansas City, the Chiefs are coming off a 12-4 season and a hosting a home playoff game. For the fans, the excitement of the draft is still buzzing with the selection of Patrick Mahomes.
Since 1983 the Chiefs had not drafted a first round QB. That changed in 2017 and strangely enough a couple months later the Chiefs GM was given his walking papers.

Kansas City is a team that seems to be caught in a bad spot. Just good enough to make you believe they could go all the way yet just short of being able to live up to those expectations. Alex Smith is the scapegoat for many fans and writers alike. He is good enough to get you to the postseason but not enough to get you over the hump. This year he is playing with a kid looking over his shoulder.
From what I’ve seen at camp, Smith looks sharp, but more importantly he is remaining the consummate professional.
Smith has been mentoring Mahomes throughout different parts of camp. It’s small things here and there but he is a willing teacher. This is the way Kansas City saw it unfolding when they drafted Mahomes.
Smith would be able to help him develop this season and maybe even get him ready to take his job next year. Mahomes couldn’t be in a better situation and time will tell how the Chiefs patience pays off.
