The Kansas City Chiefs are heavily invested in their young stable of talented players. Eric Murray is one that is making a splash in Chiefs training camp.

Murray brings a profile that maximizes a trait that the Kansas City coaching staff covets nearly above all. Murray is versatile. He can play the deep safety.

The Chiefs groomed him for that role since they drafted him in 2016. Murray can play the box safety, as he has in camp subbing for Eric Berry. He can also play a nickel or dime cornerback position if the team needs him to fill that role.

Versatility goes a long way. As a rookie, Murray played on a number of special teams units and garnered praise from both the national media as well as special teams coach Dave Toub. As the fourth safety on the depth chart in 2017 Murray appears to be set for another year of high-quality special-teams contributions.

Athleticism on display

Physically, Murray offers the combination of speed and agility that allows him to play all over the defensive backfield. If needed, he is capable of coming down out of the deep safety position to cover slot receivers and tight ends. that versatility is something that Andy Reid and Bob Sutton covet.

In college at the University of Minnesota Murray lined up predominantly as a nickel cornerback. Murray found success using his strength in Man Press technique and is most comfortable in that scheme. As a rookie, he practiced at safety as well as special teams.

Now, in his sophomore season that work is paying off. Murray has been able to make plays the second week of practice in training camp and is beginning to see reps with the first-team defense. His skill-set allows Eric Berry some rest in the preseason and could be a valuable fill in during the regular season.
