Early Thursday morning it was reported that Derrick Johnson would have his first free agent visit with the Oakland Raiders:
Former Chiefs’ standout LB Derrick Johnson is visiting today with…the Raiders, per source.
If the Chiefs can draft Reggie McKenzie’s son, the Raiders can sign one of KC’s favorites.

As a fan, it’s the last thing you want to see. One of the franchise’s favorite players going to your hated division rival isn’t something that is ever fun to accept.
This would also happen the year after Chiefs favorite Jamaal Charles went to the Denver Broncos. Both moves make you cringe when you read them.
Here’s the reality of the situation though for Johnson. He’s 36. He’s past his ability to be very effective and truth be told it will only benefit Kansas City if the Raiders do sign him.
They have the opportunity to keep Navarro Bowman who is 7 years younger and they are bringing in DJ instead. Maybe they keep Bowman but the Raiders moves this offseason have everyone questioning what is going on with a former up and coming team.
Maybe Derrick is able to go there and add depth to their linebacking core. Maybe he’s able to play a full season again.
Unfortunately, the more likely scenario is that he ends up getting injured if he plays there. He is going to be stealing playing time from someone that could help the Raiders in the future as well.
Johnson’s best role he could fill for the team is that of a mentor and he is very capable of doing that well. Here’s to hoping that the Raiders decide he can’t help them because I would really not like to see him in silver and black.
