Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has taken a step up to the second string unit on Sunday’s practice. Coach Andy Reid talked after practice and made sure to point out that he thought Tyler Bray played well on Friday. Reid continued to say that Mahomes has earned the opportunity to get repetitions with the 2nd team unit. This means that Patrick has shown enough in training camp and the preseason game to show the coaches that he is capable of being the teams backup QB.
Chiefs first round draft pick Patrick Mahomes is stepping up to the second string in practice after a great showing on Friday night.
Mahomes took advantage of his repetitions with the second unit. His first rep a deep shot to Seantavius Jones that was broken up by Marcus Peters. He would continue pushing the ball down the field and would find Kemp down the sideline a little later. Mahomes would find De’Anthony Thomas in the endzone in a red zone drill as well leading the offense to pay dirt. Reid didn’t specify how long Mahomes would continue to get second team reps but the rookie is taking advantage.
Other big news at practice on Sunday included Bennie Logan, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones practiced today for the Chiefs. Jones was activated from the PUP list and practiced but did not practice in full. He spoke after practice saying there is a plan he will follow but wouldn’t divulge the plan. He wouldn’t specify what the plan was but he did say he hurt his knee running. Kelce also talked after practice and stated that he would have practiced and played had it been the regular season.
Eric Berry continued not practicing as he rests his heel. Steven Nelson and Terrence Mitchell also both didn’t practice with a groin strain and hamstring strain respectively. Ashton Lampkin also left practice early with a knee injury. A couple of other practice notes, Kareem Hunt continues to get first string snaps at running back. Kevin Pierre-Louis got first string snaps as well at inside linebacker and got an interception as well. Pierre-Louis showed big play ability on special teams on Friday. He has the speed to cover the entire field. Chris Conley continues showing his ability getting a couple of deep catches at practice.
